DIY Chicago Hot Dog
I’m a hot dog lover¹ so I was excited to see The Paupered Chef’s tutorial for making Chicago Hot Dogs² at home. In the tutorial, (s)he tackles the improbability of the Chicago dog actually tasting good.
The Chicago Hot Dog is, perhaps, one of the most improbable food combinations in the world. We do know this: it shouldn’t work. A towering, precipitous bundle, loaded up with so many condiments that it’s twice the volume of the dog itself. It threatens to fall apart, to be so absurd it forgets its provenance as a hot dog. It’s misguided, it’s madness. Yet it’s mad enough to succeed brilliantly.
I completely agree. You look at this thing and think, “ain’t no way it will be good”. But it is more than good.
¹ I’m absolutely considering starting a tumblr of all the hot dogs I eat.
² I was at a Detroit Tigers game recently and opted for a Chicago Dog over a Coney Dog — shame on me. when in Detroit you get a coney, when in Chicago, you get a a Chicago dog. I’m better than that.
