Tyler Brule gets profiled in New York Magazine, so of course I’m going to read/write about it. Reading the part about Monocle TV got me excited — it’s being compared to my two favorite shows.
It’s a weekly hour of what Brûlé describes as “gentle, good, informative viewing” not unlike old episodes of 60 Minutes or even CBS’s retro Sunday Morning. The show will feature magazine-style reports from Monocle’s correspondents that are unhurried in tone.
Adam Lisagor sums up my feelings pretty well after watching the first episode (season 4) of Mad Men.
I shake my fist at the gods that I can’t watch the whole season tonight, and all the rest of the seasons tomorrow night.
My reasons are that I never feel like anything happens in one episode. I’m constantly left feeling like, “hmm…nothing really happened there” but when the season is over and I think back to the past episodes I’m like, “shit tons happened”.
I can never explain to people why I like show How I Met Your Mother. Usually I just mumble something about how Doogie Howser is in it. It’s a great show. While I’m not sure I’m 100% behind this description (it’s more relevant to me age-wise than Seinfeld but may not get more right, and I’ve never watched Sex & The City so I can’t comment), this seemed to be as accurate as any that I could come up with for why I like HIMYM.
“It gets more right than Seinfeld, more right than Friends, more right than Sex & The City. It’s awesome.”
So, it appears Mad Men will only last six seasons. Creator Matt Weiner stated that he could “not see writing or even continuing the series past a sixth season.” Not all that surprising really. The show is currently filming season four with new episodes starting in July.
